Magento 1 to
Magento 2
migration

Move off end-of-life Magento 1 to Magento 2 without losing data, rankings or sales. It's still Magento, so the move is more direct.

Every day on Magento 1 is borrowed time

Adobe ended support for Magento 1 in June 2020. The store still works, but the ground under it stopped moving.

Official support
Ended June 2020
Security patches
No longer issued
Quality & bug fixes
Discontinued
Extension ecosystem
Shrinking, vendors moved on
Payment-gateway support
Being withdrawn
PCI compliance
At risk on unpatched core

Unofficial patches buy time. They don't change the direction of travel.

The move to Magento 2 is overdue

The good news: we've made it routine

  • No more security patches

Adobe stopped in 2020; every new vulnerability stays open.

  • PCI compliance gets harder

An unpatched core is a liability at every audit.

  • The ecosystem has moved on

Vendors, agencies and payment providers are all on Magento 2.

  • Aging PHP and infrastructure

Years behind modern PHP, straining hosting and speed.

  • Performance ceilings

Never built for today's catalogs or Core Web Vitals.

  • Talent is drying up

Fewer developers remain, and they cost more.

  • Technical debt compounds

Every workaround on a dead platform is money lost.

The honest part:
you're already halfway home

A Magento 1 to Magento 2 move is a rebuild, yes, but it's still Magento underneath. You're not starting over, you're trading up.

What carries straight over

Because it's Magento on both ends, the familiar pieces come across without a rebuild from scratch.

  • The same concepts: attributes, stores and customer groups
  • A familiar data model, so the path is more direct
  • Catalog, customers and orders come with you
  • The technical debt gets left behind
  • Your team's Magento knowledge still applies

What changes, and what carries over

It's still Magento, so most concepts have a direct home in Magento 2, usually a more capable one.

Each row is Magento 1 → Magento 2

Your data, moved and verified,
all of it

The Magento 1 to Magento 2 advantage: it's Magento on both ends. We know exactly where every record lives, and where it belongs.

  • Products

Catalog, attributes and media, mapped to the Magento 2 model.

  • Customers

Accounts, addresses and customer groups, from the Magento 1 database.

  • Order history

Complete, so support and reporting don't lose their memory.

  • Promotions & pricing

Cart and catalog price rules and tier pricing, carried across.

  • Content

CMS pages, blocks, categories and navigation, carried into Magento 2.

  • Validation

Record-by-record reconciliation reports, built by our AI agents

Passwords come with you

Because it's Magento on both ends, password hashes migrate too, so customers keep signing in exactly as before. No forced reset, no scramble.

SEO: the move where
you can keep your URLs

Your Magento 1 URL structure can usually carry straight into Magento 2. That changes the whole SEO story of this migration.

Migration

A Magebit migration

  • Your URL structure mirrored 1:1, so there's little to redirect
  • Metadata, canonicals and structured data carried over
  • Core Web Vitals passing on staging before cutover

A careless migration

  • URL structure thrown away for a fresh Magento 2 default
  • 404s pile up as old links and bookmarks die
  • Rankings earned over years reset to zero

How rankings survive, step by step

  1. 1

    Benchmark before touching anything

Full crawl of the Magento 1 store, current rankings, traffic and top-earning pages recorded as the baseline.

  2. 2

    Preserve URLs first

Magento 2 keeps flexible URL rewrites, so your Magento 1 URLs can often be mirrored 1:1. The fewer URLs change, the less there is to redirect.

  3. 3

    Redirect what changes, 1:1

Where URLs do change, each gets its own 301. No chains, no blanket redirects.

  4. 4

    Carry the on-page layer

Metadata, canonicals and structured data carried over from Magento 1, not rebuilt from memory. Core Web Vitals passing on staging.

  5. 5

    Cut over clean, then watch

Redirects live at the moment of switch, new sitemap submitted, Search Console updated. Then daily rank and 404 monitoring against a 30/60/90-day benchmark.

How we run a Magento 1 migration:
FLOW, phase by phase

FLOW (Frame, Lay Groundwork, Output, Win) is our 12-year delivery framework. Here's each phase when the store you're leaving runs on Magento 1.

Everything is figured out before anything is touched, and on a Magento 1 migration "everything" has a specific shape.

  • Attribute sets, variations and media inventoried, ready to map straight into Magento 2
  • Every extension and custom module catalogued and given a destination: port or rebuild
  • Direct extraction planned: what we take, how, and what gets cleaned on the way out
  • Aging PHP, undocumented code and accumulated technical debt, each risk named
  • Team assigned, you meet your project manager, everyone aligned on what and why

A fresh Magento 2 is installed and environments are verified. The landing zone is familiar, but it’s still designed before anything moves.

  • Attribute sets and store structure mapped from Magento 1, confirmed before import
  • Magento 2 extensions and rebuilt modules go in first, so every record has a home
  • Hyvä / Venta foundation stood up, so design starts immediately
  • Quote Workshops lock extension decisions item by item
  • Closes with kick-off: timeline agreed, no open questions

Frequently asked questions

If you can't find the answer you're looking for, feel free to reach out to us. We're here to help!

Officially unsupported since June 2020: no security patches, no quality fixes and shrinking extension and payment-gateway support. Unofficial patches buy time, but PCI compliance and long-term risk both point the same way, to Magento 2.

A rebuild, not an in-place upgrade, because Magento 2 is a new architecture. The advantage is that it’s still Magento: the data model, concepts and much of your team’s knowledge carry straight over, and it’s the ideal moment to leave technical debt behind.

Each one gets a destination in the audit: a native Magento 2 feature, a Magento 2 version of the extension, or a custom rebuild. Bespoke Magento 1 modules are re-engineered for Magento 2’s architecture.

Not if it’s done properly, and a Magento move has an advantage: your existing URL structure can usually be preserved 1:1. Whatever changes gets a 1:1 301 redirect, with metadata and rank monitoring before and after launch.

Magento Open Source for control and a lean, powerful core; Adobe Commerce for native B2B and advanced merchandising; Adobe Commerce Cloud for managed enterprise infrastructure. Whichever you choose, the storefront is rebuilt on Hyvä. We map it with you in the consultation.

It depends on catalog size, extensions and customization; the consultation gives you a phased plan with real dates. Design runs in parallel with data migration, so a redesign doesn’t extend the timeline.
