What a Magento progressive web app actually gives you

A PWA is a separate frontend that talks to Magento through its APIs.

An app shell that loads once

The interface loads on the first visit. After that, each page only fetches the content that’s new.

  • Header, menus and layout cached on the device
  • Later pages download product data, not a whole page

Instant navigation

Moving between categories, products and the cart swaps the content in place instead of reloading the page.

  • No white flash between pages
  • Filters and sorting update without a reload
  • The cart stays open while shoppers browse

Browsing on a weak signal

Pages and assets are cached on the device, so shoppers can keep browsing when the connection drops.

  • Recently viewed products available offline
  • The store reconnects quietly when the signal returns

Installable from the browser

Shoppers add the store to their home screen and open it full-screen, with your icon and no app store involved.

  • Your icon, name and splash screen
  • Opens without browser bars, like an app

Push notifications

Back-in-stock alerts, order updates and offers sent to Android phones and installed iPhone PWAs.

  • Back-in-stock and price-drop alerts
  • Order and delivery updates
  • Campaigns sent only to opted-in shoppers

A frontend without theme limits

Layouts and interactions aren’t limited by what a Magento theme allows, because the frontend is built separately.

  • Page layouts designed around your brand
  • Interactions a standard theme can’t offer

It also means two codebases, each built, deployed and maintained on its own.

A custom PWA, Adobe Commerce Storefront or Hyvä: how we choose

We decide based on your catalog, your budget and who will maintain the store. New projects no longer start on PWA Studio.

A custom Magento PWA

A progressive web app on Magento’s GraphQL API, with an architecture chosen for your store.

Choose it when
You need offline browsing, install, push or several systems.
Weigh first
The most flexible option, with a second codebase to own.
How we build it
React or Vue on Magento’s GraphQL API.

Adobe Commerce Storefront

Adobe’s storefront on Edge Delivery Services, with drop-in components and a document editor.

Choose it when
You run the Cloud Service, or 2.4.7+ with Optimizer.
Weigh first
Not on Open Source, and PaaS needs a manual setup.
Built for
Page speed and content publishing, not as a PWA.

Hyvä

Not a PWA. A lightweight Magento theme that replaces Luma’s heavy frontend while staying inside Magento.

Choose it when
Speed is the goal and your extensions live in the theme.
Weigh first
No offline browsing, installation or push notifications.
Why us
The most certified Hyvä agency, and a Platinum Partner.

When a PWA is the wrong answer

A PWA isn’t the right fit for every store. We build Hyvä stores too, so we recommend whichever suits yours.

When speed is the only goal

Hyvä gets most Magento stores into the green on Core Web Vitals without a separate frontend.

When nobody will own two codebases

A frontend and backend maintained separately age badly without a team for both.

When your extensions live in the theme

Anything rendered through Magento’s templates has to be rebuilt against the API.

When the budget is tight

If the case rests on speed alone, the cheaper theme route usually wins.

Maintaining PWA Studio and custom Magento PWAs

We no longer start new stores on PWA Studio, but we still maintain and extend the ones already running.

One team looks after both halves: the Magento backend and the PWA in front of it.Magento support and maintenanceDedicated Magento developers

Kept compatible with Magento

Upgrades, security patches and GraphQL changes tested against the PWA before customers see them.

Features rebuilt against the API

Extensions that only worked in the old theme brought into the PWA properly.

Speed brought back

Performance lost to years of changes found and fixed, checked on real devices.

New work on the existing codebase

By developers who know PWA Studio, Venia and custom React and Vue storefronts.

A plan for what’s next

When a PWA costs more to keep than replace, we’ll plan the move to Adobe Commerce Storefront or Hyvä.

What we build into a custom Magento PWA

The storefront features your customers already use, rebuilt for the PWA, plus a few only a PWA can offer.

Browsing and discovery

Finding the right product, fast, across every market.

  • Layered filters that update without a reload
  • Search through Magento, Adobe Live Search, Klevu or Algolia
  • Configurable products with live stock, prices and options
  • Location-based store, language and currency selection
  • Several languages, right-to-left Arabic included
Cart and checkout

Magento’s checkout logic, rebuilt for the PWA.

  • One-step checkout built against Magento’s checkout logic
  • Payment methods and shipping rules carried over intact
  • Apple Pay and Google Pay where your provider supports them
  • Address validation where delivery formats vary by country
  • Prices locked through checkout on fast-moving catalogs
Customer accounts

Everything a returning customer expects.

  • Order history and reorder in one tap
  • Saved addresses and wishlists
  • Customer-group pricing and trade accounts from Magento
App-like behavior

The features only a PWA can offer.

  • Offline pages and cached assets, chosen deliberately
  • Home-screen install with your icon and splash screen
  • Web push for back-in-stock, order and campaign messages
Data and integrations

The PWA fed by the systems behind the store.

  • Real-time pricing from market data or your ERP
  • Stock and orders synced with ERPs like Microsoft Dynamics
  • GA4 tracking for every in-app route change

How a Magento PWA stays fast

Most people want a PWA for speed. That comes from decisions made during the build, not from the framework itself.

  • Server-rendered first pages

Complete HTML on arrival, fast to display and fully readable by search engines.

  • Code split by route

Each page loads only the code it needs, so the product page doesn’t carry the checkout.

  • Caching at every layer

The shell precached on the device, data refreshed in the background, GraphQL cached at the edge.

  • Only the data each view needs

GraphQL queries shaped to the page, not full Magento pages rendered on every request.

  • Images sized for the device

Responsive images in modern formats, loaded as they come into view.

Turning a Magento PWA into iOS and Android apps

A PWA installs from the browser already. The app stores work differently on Android and iPhone.

Android

A PWA publishes to Google Play with little extra work.

iPhone

Installs with push. The App Store needs a native shell.

Both stores, done for you

Icons, splash screens, listings and reviews, handled.

Fully native apps

For device features a PWA can’t reach, build native.

How a Magento PWA project runs

We run PWA projects the same way as every other build, using FLOW.

The right frontend, not the most expensive one

Most stores that ask us for a PWA really want a faster store, and those aren’t always the same thing. Tell me what you’re trying to fix and I’ll tell you what I’d do: a custom PWA, Adobe Commerce Storefront, Hyvä, or more work on the PWA you already have.

More than a new theme, because it’s a second frontend with its own upkeep. Once you approve the scoped estimate, our Fixed Cost Estimate Guarantee holds us to it. If Hyvä would meet your goals for less, we’ll recommend it instead.

If speed is the main goal and your extensions rely on Magento’s theme, Hyvä is usually cheaper to build and maintain. If you need offline browsing, home-screen installation or push notifications, a custom PWA is worth the extra cost.

Extensions exist that add PWA features, such as a web app manifest or a service worker, to a normal Magento theme. They can help installability, but they don’t change how the storefront renders, so they won’t deliver a PWA’s speed on their own. A full Magento PWA is a separate frontend.

Adobe’s storefront built on Edge Delivery Services. It’s included with Adobe Commerce as a Cloud Service, needs an Adobe Commerce Optimizer license on Adobe Commerce 2.4.7 or later, and doesn’t run on Magento Open Source. We’ll check whether your license and catalog suit it.

Headless is the architecture: the storefront is separated from Magento and talks to it through APIs. A PWA is one kind of storefront you can build on that architecture. Every Magento PWA is headless, but not every headless store is a PWA.

It can, as long as the first page is rendered on the server, so search engines receive complete content rather than an empty shell waiting for JavaScript. We build that in from the start, along with structured data and GA4 tracking that counts every in-app page view.

Yes, whether it’s built on PWA Studio or a custom framework. We audit the frontend and the Magento backend together, since problems in a PWA often sit between the two, then either stabilize it or continue the roadmap. If keeping it costs more than replacing it, we’ll plan the replacement with you.
